Everything In Order And Still Not Glad

There is a folder in the second drawer and it has a label on it.

Inside is the will, which has been done for years and updated twice. The letters, one for each of them, sealed, written in a good pen on a Sunday afternoon about six years ago and revised once since. The list of accounts. The envelope with the passwords, which his brother knows about. The instructions about the music, which are two lines long and slightly funny on purpose.

It is a very good folder. He is quietly proud of it, in the way a man is proud of a job done properly that nobody will thank him for.

He has been calling it being ready for about twenty years.

Then somebody said something to him on Tuesday, in an entirely ordinary conversation, and he has not been able to put it down since.

They were talking about the return of Christ, in the way people do over a table, and a woman he has known for years said she found the whole idea glad.

Glad. That was the word she used, and she used it without any effort at all, as though it were the obvious word.

And he sat there and went looking for it in himself and could not find it anywhere.

He found the folder. He found a very calm and organized man who has arranged everything so that nobody will have to sort anything out. He found a settled theology, all of it correct, all of it held sincerely.

He did not find glad.

What he found underneath, when he was honest with himself in the car afterward, was a low steady hum that has been running so long he had stopped hearing it as a sound. Not terror. Nothing that would show. A kind of bracing, the way your shoulders sit when you are expecting a loud noise and have been expecting it since about 1998.

And here is the thing he saw on the ring road that has been sitting on him ever since.

The folder was never preparation. The folder was a way of not feeling it.

If you have arranged everything and still cannot find the gladness, pull out the chair. There is coffee and the door is open.

The verse that names the hum

There is a sentence in Hebrews that names, with startling precision, the thing you found underneath the folder.

And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.Hebrews 2:15

All their lifetime. That is the phrase.

It is not describing a moment of terror. It is describing exactly what you heard on the ring road, a low continuous thing that runs underneath a whole life and shapes it quietly without ever announcing itself.

And Scripture treats that as a form of captivity. Bondage, it says. Not weakness, not immaturity, not a failure of faith. A chain somebody is in.

And then look at the verb attached to it. Deliver. Somebody comes and gets them out.

You are being described in a verse that names the hum and calls it a chain rather than a character flaw. Hebrews 2:15 says all their lifetime subject to bondage and puts the delivering entirely in Christ's hands, and it is the Holy Spirit who kept both halves in one sentence, which means the thing under your folder has a name in Scripture and it has already been dealt with by somebody other than you.

Nothing here is going to frighten you into anything

Let us be plain about what this page will not do, because a man who has been braced since 1998 deserves to know early.

There will be no scenarios here. Nothing about the news, nothing about signs, no reading of anything happening anywhere as a countdown. That is not what this is for, and frightening people has never once been a legitimate way to move them.

You are not being urged along by fear, and no part of what is being handed to you tonight runs on dread. Romans 8:15 says ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear, but the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father, and it is the Holy Spirit Himself who is named in that verse as the one produced instead of the fear, which means the register you were built for on this subject is the one you have not been able to find.

The folder was a good thing done for a second reason

Now the drawer, and let us be fair to it, because it is going to get treated too harshly otherwise.

The folder is a genuine kindness. Somebody, one day, will open that drawer at the worst moment of their life and find that a man who loved them thought about them carefully on a Sunday afternoon six years ago. That is not nothing, and it should stay exactly where it is.

The trouble is not the folder. The trouble is what got hung on it.

You were doing a real kindness and quietly asking it to do a second job it was never able to do. Matthew 6:34 says take therefore no thought for the morrow, and it is written by somebody who also told people to count the cost before building a tower, so the word has never been against sensible arrangements, and it is the same Spirit who gives peace rather than a filing system, which means the settledness you were reaching for was always coming from somewhere else.

Arranging things is not the same as being unafraid. You have known that for about a week now.
