Ready, Not AnxiousRomans 8:15

The Subject He Changes

This message is for the man who changes the subject smoothly whenever the conversation turns to His return, and who has done it so often that his children have learned not to raise it in front of him

He is extremely good at it. That is the trouble.

The conversation goes somewhere, and he does the thing he does, which is to pick up something adjacent and warm and genuinely interesting and move everybody onto it without any of them noticing they have been moved.

It is not rude. It is not even obvious. He has been doing it since before his children were born and it is one of the things people like about him.

The subject is Him coming back.

And here is what he found out about six weeks ago, from his daughter, who was twenty two and had had a glass of something and did not mean anything by it at all.

She said, in passing, to somebody else, at that table: we do not talk about that in front of Dad.

Then she looked at him and went the color people go.

He said something light and it passed. It passed for everybody except him.

Because he had not known. He genuinely had not known. He thought he was moving conversations along smoothly and he had not once considered that anybody had noticed, let alone that a rule had formed in his own house about a subject.

He has thought about very little else since.

If the people around you have learned what not to raise, come and sit under this vine a minute. Nobody is going to explain anything at you.

The Subject He Changes

The Spirit that was given is not the kind that makes a person flinch

There is a sentence in Romans about what happened at the deepest level when a person came to God, and it names two possibilities and rules one out.

For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.Romans 8:15

Read what is ruled out first. Not the spirit of bondage again to fear. Paul says it as something already settled, not as an aspiration.

And read what is put in its place. The Spirit of adoption, and the cry attached to it is the most domestic word available: Abba. That is not the vocabulary of a hearing. It is what a child says in a kitchen.

So the relationship you were brought into is described in family terms and the fear is specifically excluded, and neither of those is presented as a target you are working towards.

You have not received a spirit of fear, and that is stated as a completed fact rather than a goal. Romans 8:15 rules out bondage to fear and names the Spirit of adoption instead, which means what happens in you when the subject comes up did not arrive from where you have quietly assumed it did.

What your daughter said is not an accusation

Now the thing that has actually been keeping you awake, which is not the subject at all.

You found out that a rule had formed in your house and that you had made it without knowing.

That is a genuinely difficult thing to learn about yourself and I am not going to make it smaller than it is. But notice what it is not.

It is not evidence that you have been a bad father, or that your children think less of you, or that anybody in that courtyard has been suffering under a restriction. It is evidence that people who love you learned, over years, to protect you from something, and that they did it without being asked, and that they have never once mentioned it. Romans 8:15 says ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear, but the Spirit of adoption, and the Spirit named there is the one actually given to that courtyard.

That is not a rule against you. That is affection working out how to be kind.

You are held by people who noticed and covered for you, and that was love rather than judgement. Galatians 6:2 says bear ye one another's burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ, and it is the Holy Spirit who binds a household together into that kind of noticing, which means what your daughter said out loud was a description of care.

And here is what this article will not do.

There is no description of anything here. No sequence, no order, no chart, no reading of the world, and not one sentence built to make you take this more seriously by making it more alarming. This site does not use fear as a motive, and it certainly will not on a man who already carries more than he can say.

I am also not going to send you looking for where yours started.

You are wanted at this rather than examined by it, and the word gives a homecoming as the reason. Luke 21:28 says look up and lift up your heads, for your redemption draweth nigh, and it is the Holy Spirit who is called the earnest of that inheritance in Ephesians 1:14, which means the thing you have moved every conversation away from is described in Scripture as being bought back and brought home.

God is the one holding you, and He is not waiting at the end of this to find something out about you.

The breakthrough

Something is on offer here, under a vine or wherever you are reading this.

You are being brought toward a homecoming rather than an inspection, and that is true this evening. Luke 21:28 names redemption drawing near as the reason for a lifted head, and it is the Holy Spirit who is the guarantee of that inheritance, which means the gladness the rest of your household has around this subject is not a thing you are failing to produce.

Nothing here asks you to raise it at that table. Not tonight, not as proof, not at all. Your daughter said what she said and it has passed and nobody needs a conversation.

What is available is one small change of shape, made in a body, on purpose, with nobody watching. Because a body that has been moving away from something for twenty years is not argued out of it. It is walked out of it, slowly, by small things that turn out not to hurt.

Declare this over yourself

You speak these as somebody standing in a place given to you rather than earned. It was given to you in Christ, the authority is His own and delegated, and it is the Spirit named in Romans 8 as the Spirit of adoption rather than of fear. When He comes, and how, is His to decide, so leave the outcome with Him and simply say what is true.

  1. Subject I move everybody off, you are not the shape of my faith. Romans says I have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear but the Spirit of adoption, and He is the one crying Abba in me. You are a habit and you are not a conviction.
  2. Rule that formed in my own house, you were made out of love and not out of judgement, and in the name of Jesus I set the shame of you outside this courtyard. Scripture says bear ye one another's burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ, and the Holy Spirit binds a household into that noticing. Nobody in this family has been suffering under a restriction.
  3. Lord, You are bringing me toward a homecoming and not an inspection, and Your Spirit is the guarantee of everything already bought. I am looking up once and carrying on with my evening. I am ready, and I am not afraid.
