The Morning It PassedPsalm 130:6

The Room She Has Not Prayed Out Loud In Since

This message is for the woman who prayed out loud over somebody in front of a room, nothing happened, and who has not opened her mouth to pray in front of another person in two years

There were eleven people, and she knows the number because she counted them on the way in.

Somebody had asked her to pray. Not to lead the evening, not to teach, just to pray out loud over a woman sitting on a kitchen chair that had been carried through because the good chairs were all taken.

She was glad to be asked. She had been praying for that woman privately since the spring, four months of it, on the walk and in the car and at the sink, and she believed something was going to happen that night.

And she said so.

That is the part she cannot get past. She said it out loud, in front of all eleven of them, in a warm room with the rain going on the window. She said, I think tonight is the night.

Then she put her hand on the woman's shoulder and prayed, and she prayed well, and she meant the whole of it.

And nothing happened.

Not nothing in the sense of something slow that took its time. Nothing in the sense that the woman said thank you, and stood up carefully the way she always stood up, and reached for her stick, and somebody carried the chair back through to the kitchen, and the kettle went on.

She got through the tea. She is good at tea.

What she has never told anybody is that she has not prayed out loud in front of another living person since. It has been two years. Nobody has noticed, because she is the kind of woman who can stand in a circle with her eyes closed and look entirely present, and she is present, she is just silent.

She still prays. Constantly. In the car, at the sink, on the walk. Just never where it can be heard, and never with a date on it, and never again the sentence I think tonight is the night.

If there is a room you can still see when you close your eyes, come and stand at the door of it for a minute. Nobody is going in.

The Room She Has Not Prayed Out Loud In Since

The watchman and the morning are two different things

There is a line in the Psalms about waiting that says the same thing twice in one verse, and the repetition is not an accident of translation. The man saying it needed to hear himself say it more than once.

My soul waiteth for the Lord more than they that watch for the morning: I say, more than they that watch for the morning.Psalm 130:6

Look at who is in the picture. A watchman on a wall at the last hour of the night, straining east.

He does not raise the sun. It has never once occurred to him that he might. He is not standing there generating light by the intensity of his looking, and if the morning is late, nobody comes and asks him what he did wrong.

His whole job is to be facing the right direction when it comes.

You were watching for a morning, and watching has never been the same thing as manufacturing one. Psalm 130:6 puts a man beside a sunrise he does not lift, and the Holy Spirit kept that picture in the book instead of a heroic one, so what happened in that front room was a woman facing the right direction, and it was never a woman failing.

That distinction is the whole of it, and it is the thing nobody said to you afterward, because everybody was busy being kind about the tea.

What was actually wrong, and it was not you

Something was wrong that night. It is worth saying plainly rather than pretending the evening went fine.

What was wrong was the timing, and the timing was never given to you.

The disciples asked about timing directly, on the last morning they had with Him, and He did not scold them for asking. He simply told them it was not theirs to hold.

You have a faith that came through that room intact, and a timetable that was never issued to you in the first place. Scripture puts the times and the seasons in the Father's own keeping in Acts 1:7, and the Spirit who carries that verse has never handed the calendar to anybody standing in a front room with their hand on a shoulder, which means the thing that turned out to be wrong was not your believing.

Say it in the plainest way it goes. It did not happen, and you are still here. That is not a consolation prize. Two years of praying in the car is what perseverance looks like from the inside, and it looks like nothing, and it is not nothing.

Somebody heard you, and it was not the eleven

Here is the part that hurts, so let us go at it slowly.

There is a woman who did not get up out of a chair, and there is a sentence you said in front of eleven people, and it is the sentence that closed your mouth.

You are held in a place where nobody is keeping the transcript of that evening against you. Romans 8:26 says the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us because we do not know what to pray as we ought, and it is written into the book as a plain admission rather than a warning, which means the God you prayed to that night was already praying underneath you while you did it.

He was not standing at the back with His arms folded, waiting to see whether you would call it right.

The breakthrough

Something is being offered right here, and it is smaller and better than a second chance to be right.

You have a mouth that was never taken from you, and it went into a drawer by your own hand rather than by any verdict of heaven. The word never records one apostle being silenced for praying over somebody who stayed sick, and it is the Holy Spirit who gives the utterance all through the book of Acts rather than a believer auditioning for it, so the voice you put away is sitting there entirely undamaged.

Nobody is asking you to go back to that room. Nobody is asking you to explain what happened, or to work out what it meant, or to decide whether you heard God at all that spring.

You are being handed the next ordinary thing, and the next ordinary thing is the whole of what is being asked. Isaiah 42:3 says a bruised reed He does not break and smoking flax He does not quench, and it is His Spirit who carries a word at the weight a person can actually take, so nothing heavier than a kettle is coming at you tonight.

Declare this over yourself

You speak these standing in a place that was given to you rather than earned. It was given in Christ, the authority is His and delegated, and what comes of the saying, and when, stays His to decide. Say what is true and leave the rest with Him.

  1. Tuesday night in that front room, you are not the last word my mouth ever gets. Psalm 130 sets the watchman beside a morning he has never once lifted, and the Holy Spirit put the line in twice because a person needs it twice. I am watching for the morning again, and the morning has never needed my help to arrive.
  2. Fear that my voice is what broke it, in the name of Jesus you are out of this house and you are not staying for the tea. The word puts the times and the seasons in the Father's keeping and never once put them in mine, and His Spirit prays underneath me exactly where I do not know how. I am opening my mouth in the next room I stand in.
  3. Lord, You were in that front room when the kettle went on, and You have been in the car and at the sink every day since. Your Spirit makes intercession under every prayer I get wrong, and Your word keeps the watchman on the wall and never once blames him for the dark. I am standing up now and doing the next ordinary thing, and I am doing it out loud.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
