The Woman Who Went Sharp

It was a small thing and nobody else in that room noticed.

Somebody was telling her about their news. Good news, the kind you tell people standing up with your coat still on, and the room was doing what a room does with good news.

And she said the right thing. Everybody heard her say the right thing.

But underneath it, in a place only she could hear, there was a flat little voice that said: of course.

Two syllables. That was all. And it was not even bitterness exactly. It was more like the sound a thing makes when it has been bent so many times in the same place that it has finally gone.

She has been waiting for a particular thing for a long while. It does not matter what and she would not want it set out. Long enough that people have stopped asking. Long enough that the asking, when it did happen, had become its own small ordeal.

She went home that afternoon and sat in the car outside her own house.

Because here is what she has worked out and has told nobody at all.

She does not recognize the woman who said of course.

She used to be genuinely glad. Not performing it, actually glad, first thing, without effort. And somewhere in the years that stopped being the first thing that arrived, and something flatter arrived first instead, and she has to go and fetch the gladness now and put it on, and she can feel herself doing it.

If you have heard a flat little voice in yourself lately, come and sit down at this table. Nobody is going to tell you that you are ungrateful.

Paul writes patience as a thing that has to be supplied

There is a sentence in Romans that people read as encouragement and it is actually a piece of engineering.

But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.Romans 8:25

The word behind patience there is not the mild domestic one. It is a load-bearing word: staying under a weight without breaking. Paul is not describing a temperament. He is describing something a person does while carrying, and he uses it because he knows the carrying is what does the damage.

And look at the context he sets it in, because it is the least sentimental passage in the letter. He has just said that the whole creation groans, and that we groan within ourselves, and that the Spirit helps our infirmities because we do not know what to pray for as we ought.

Groaning. Infirmities. Not knowing what to ask. That is the company Paul puts waiting in, and none of it is a rebuke.

You are not being told off for what the waiting has done to you. Romans 8:26 says the Spirit helps our infirmities in the very next breath after the waiting, which means the Holy Spirit is described as arriving specifically at the place where a waiting person has worn thin, and that is a provision rather than a verdict.

Souring is what unattended waiting does, and it is not the same as sin

Now the thing that has never once made it out loud.

You did not choose that flat voice. It was not a decision. It arrived, the way a callus arrives, at exactly the spot where the same thing has rubbed for years, and a callus is not a moral event.

But I am not going to tell you it does not matter either, because you already know it does and you would stop reading.

Here is the actual distinction. The souring is not a sin you have committed. It is a thing that happens to waiting that has nowhere to go. Waiting held entirely inside a person, unspoken, with no one to hand it to, will always eventually change the shape of the person holding it. That is not a flaw in you. It is a fact about weight.

You have somewhere to put this, and it does not require you to feel differently first. 1 Peter 5:7 says to cast all your care upon Him, for He cares for you, and it is His Spirit who makes that an actual transfer rather than a sentiment, which means the flat voice has an address and it is not your own chest.

And I am not going to tell you the waiting ends. I do not know that, nobody does, and anybody who tells you otherwise on a website is guessing at your life. There is no timeline in this article and there is not going to be one.

What I will tell you is the other half, which is the half you asked for without knowing it. You are not being made smaller by this, whatever it feels like from inside. 2 Corinthians 4:16 says that though the outward man perish, the inward man is renewed day by day, and it is the Holy Spirit who does that renewing, which means the wearing you can feel and the shrinking you fear are two different things and only one of them is actually happening.

God is the one holding you through this, and He has been holding you through every year of it, including the years when the gladness stopped arriving first.
