The Chair He Kept At The Table

He laid it for nine years.

Same place, same end of the table, and after the first year or so nobody in that house mentioned it because there was nothing to say that had not been said.

It was not morbid and it was not a shrine. If you had asked him he would have told you, plainly, that he expected a particular thing to happen and that when it did there would need to be a place, and that laying it was simpler than explaining why he had not.

Then one Sunday he did not lay it.

He did not decide to. He was doing the table the way he always did and he got to the end of it and something in him simply did not put the plate down, and he stood there for a second with it in his hand and then took it back to the dresser.

Nobody said anything. He did not sleep much that night.

Here is what he has never resolved, and it has been years now.

He does not know what he did that Sunday.

If it was wisdom, then he grew up a bit and stopped needing a prop, and that is a good thing and he should be at peace about it.

If it was surrender, then he gave up on something he had been asked to hold, and he did it quietly, at a dresser, without telling a living soul.

And he cannot tell which. He genuinely cannot, and he has turned it over for years, and both readings fit everything he knows about himself.

If you took a place away and never worked out what you did, sit down at this table. Nobody here is going to score it.

The guarantee is held by somebody else

There is a word Paul uses about the Spirit that settles what you are asking, and it comes out of a marketplace rather than a pulpit.

Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession.Ephesians 1:14

An earnest, in that world, was a deposit paid up front. Not a promise about money. Actual money, handed over, which made the rest of the transaction certain and which the buyer would forfeit if he walked away.

So Paul is describing the Holy Spirit as the down payment on what is coming. The one who guarantees it is God, and the guarantee has already been paid, and it was paid before you laid a single place at that table.

Which means the arrangement was never resting on your maintenance of it.

You are holding a guarantee that somebody else is keeping, and it did not lapse at a dresser on a Sunday. Ephesians 1:14 makes the Spirit Himself the deposit on the inheritance, which means what secured it was never your nine years of laying a place and never your one evening of not.

Wisdom or surrender is the wrong question

Now let me take the question off you, because it has been carried for years and it does not have an answer, and it does not have one because it is malformed.

You have been asking which of two verdicts applies to a man standing at a dresser with a plate in his hand, and neither one was ever going to be handed down. Romans 8:1 says there is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, and it is written in the present tense about people in the middle of a groaning creation, and it is the same Spirit named in that chapter as the one bearing witness, which means the courtroom you have been standing in was never in session.

But look at what the passage does. It does not evaluate the man at all. It describes a transaction that was completed by somebody else, on terms he had no part in setting, guaranteed by a deposit already in his possession.

Your Sunday is not in that sentence anywhere. It is not being weighed. There is no column it goes into.

You are not being assessed for what you did with a plate, and there is no verdict pending on it. Romans 8:1 says there is now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, and it is the Spirit of life named immediately after who made you free, which means the trial you have been conducting on yourself for years has no prosecutor except you.

And I am not going to tell you when. Not the season, not the sign, not anything you could put in a diary. This tradition learned what that costs, and it learned it in public, and this site will not sell it back to anybody.

But the hope itself is not the thing that hurt you, and it is worth having the difference clear. What hurt was an arrangement that could succeed or fail every Sunday. What is on offer is a Person, held to you by a deposit you did not pay.

You have been carried through all nine of those years and through the one that followed. Isaiah 46:4 says I have made and I will bear, and it is His Spirit who does the bearing, which means the man who could not sleep that night was being held while he lay there.

God is the one holding you, and He was holding you on the Sunday you took the place away as much as on the nine years you laid it.
