Rest On PurposeExodus 33:14

The Phone He Has Never Turned Off

This message is for the man everybody calls when something goes wrong, who has not had one day in four years with his phone off, and who has quietly started to believe that being reachable is the same thing as being faithful

He can tell you where it is right now without looking.

Counter, face up, charging, about four feet from the bed. It has been in roughly that spot every night for four years. In the shower it goes on the shelf by the door. In the car it goes in the cradle. At a meal it goes face down beside his plate, which he thinks of as a compromise.

He knows the difference between every sound it makes. He is up and moving before the second buzz, every time, without thinking about it, the way you catch a glass going off a table.

Four years, and it has not been off once.

Not for an hour. Not for a wedding, not for a funeral, not on the two holidays. He has silenced it. He has never turned it off, and there is a difference, and he knows exactly what the difference is.

He is the one people call. That is not vanity, it is just true. When something goes badly wrong in about nine households he could name, his is the number that gets dialed, and it gets dialed at the hour when things actually go wrong, which is not the daytime.

And he has never once regretted answering. That is the part that makes this hard. Every single call was a real person having a real bad night, and he was there, and being there mattered.

Here is the thing he has not said out loud.

Somewhere in those four years, without ever deciding it, he started to believe that being reachable is what faithful means.

Nobody taught him that. No one ever stood up and said it. He assembled it himself, quietly, out of nine years of good intentions and four years of a phone that has never been off, and it has hardened into a doctrine he would not be able to find a verse for.

His daughter asked him at the table, in a completely ordinary voice, what would happen if he turned it off for one Saturday afternoon.

He gave her four reasons. They were all good reasons.

She said okay Dad, and went back to her food, and he has thought about the way she said that at least once a day since.

If you cannot remember the last hour nobody could reach you, come and sit down. The kettle is on and nobody is going to ask you for anything.

The Phone He Has Never Turned Off

The sentence where the rest is handed over

There is an exchange between God and a very tired man leading a very difficult group of people, and the answer he gets has two halves that most people only ever quote one of.

And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.Exodus 33:14

The presence, and the rest. In one breath, in one sentence, from the same mouth.

Notice the verb. I will give. Not I will permit, once the work is at a reasonable stopping point. Not I will allow, subject to nobody needing you. Give.

And notice who is receiving it. A man carrying an entire nation who has just finished telling God he cannot do this alone.

You are being handed rest by the same God who is handing you His presence, and both arrive in the same sentence. Exodus 33:14 puts the giving of the rest in the same breath as the going of the presence, and the Holy Spirit kept those two clauses joined rather than making the second one conditional on the first being deserved, which means the hour you have been treating as a thing to be earned has been sitting there as a gift the whole time.

Commanded, and that changes what it is

Here is the piece that will do the most work, and it is a small piece of grammar.

Rest, in Scripture, is not advice.

It sits in the commandments, in among the ones about murder and theft and the name of God, in the same voice and the same list. It is not a wellness suggestion tucked in at the end for the people who have time.

Which means something a tired man rarely lets himself think. Refusing to stop is not the extra mile. It is not a heroic overshoot of what was asked. It is a quiet declining of something that was given as an instruction.

You have permission that was never conditional, and it was issued as a command rather than as a concession. Deuteronomy 5:15 grounds the whole commandment in the fact that the people it was given to had been slaves and were not any more, and it is written that way rather than as a reward for productivity, and the Spirit of the Lord where He is brings liberty rather than a tighter rota.

That is the whole thing. It is commanded, not earned. Say it once here before we go on, because everything after this leans on it.

Nine households, and the one thing nobody has weighed

Now the calls, because the calls are real and nothing here is going to be dismissive about them. Nine households. Real people, real bad nights, and you were there for every one. You have weighed what it would cost them if you were unreachable for an hour, carefully, several times, at two in the morning.

You were never asked to be the one who never sleeps, and the load you have been carrying was designed for shoulders that are not yours. Psalm 121:4 says He that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep, and it is written of God specifically and about nobody else in the whole book, and it is the Holy Spirit who is called the Comforter rather than the pastor being called that, which means the round the clock keeping was already covered before your phone existed.

There is a keeping going on in those nine houses that does not run through your handset. It was going on before you had the number and it will be going on during the hour the phone is in the other room.

The breakthrough

Something is being offered here and it is very small and it will feel enormous.

You have one hour that was given to you in the same sentence as the presence of God, and it is already yours rather than owed. Exodus 33:14 says I will give thee rest to a man in the middle of an impossible job, and the Holy Spirit kept that promise attached to the presence and detached from the completion of the work, so there is nothing left to finish before the hour becomes available.

Nobody is asking you to hand the nine households to anybody. Nobody is asking you to change your number, or to explain yourself, or to stop being the one people call. You are being handed one hour.

Declare this over yourself

You speak these standing in a place given to you in Christ rather than earned. The authority is His, delegated, and the outcome and its timing stay His to decide. Say what is true, and leave the rest with Him.

  1. Four years of a phone that has never once been off, you are not the measure of a faithful man. Exodus 33 has God saying My presence shall go with thee and I will give thee rest, and the Holy Spirit kept the giving of it in the same breath as the going. Rest is commanded and not earned, and I am taking the hour He already gave me.
  2. Fear that a house falls the hour I cannot be reached, in the name of Jesus you let go of my hand and my handset. The word says He that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep and says it about God and about nobody else, and His Spirit is the Comforter carrying those nine houses tonight. I am shutting a door between me and it for one hour.
  3. Lord, You gave the rest and the presence in the same sentence to a man who had just told You he could not do it alone. Your word puts the stopping in the commandments rather than in the suggestions, and Your Spirit brings liberty where He is. I am sitting in a chair for an hour with nothing in it, and I am not going to make it useful.
