The Rest That Was Just A Different Job

She would have told you she rests plenty.

She would have said it warmly, with no defensiveness in it at all, because she genuinely believed it. Ask her about rest and she would tell you about the porch in the evening, the rocker, the light going gold across the boards, and she would mean every word.

Then a neighbor asked her, in the most ordinary way, what she actually does when she rests.

And she answered out loud.

She said, well, I come out here about six with the beans, or the mending, or I write the letter I owe somebody, or I go through the list for the morning so the morning is not a scramble.

She heard it as it came out of her.

Every single item had an outcome. Every one of them produced something. The beans got shelled. The socks got darned. The letter got written. The morning got easier.

What she had been calling rest for four years was the swap from the loud work to the quiet work.

That was it. That was the whole system. From about six o'clock she moved from jobs that make noise to jobs that do not, and because the second set is gentle and slow and done sitting down, she filed it under resting and never looked at it again.

The neighbor did not say anything. That is what got her. The woman just looked at her, kindly, for slightly too long, and then asked about somebody's grandchild, and the conversation went on.

She has not been able to leave it alone since.

Because once she started counting, she could not find the hour. Not in the last month, not in the last year, not since a hospital stay four years ago that she does not count because nobody counts that.

She cannot find one hour in four years where her hands were empty and she was awake.

If your resting has hands in it, come on up and sit on the rail a minute. There is nothing out here that needs doing.

The verse that puts quietness where you expect effort

There is a line in Isaiah spoken to people who were busy solving their own problem at considerable speed, and the shape of the sentence is the lesson.

For thus saith the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel; In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength.Isaiah 30:15

Look at where the strength is.

Anybody would expect that sentence to end differently. In effort and in diligence shall be your strength. In keeping at it. That is where a working woman's ear goes.

It says quietness. And it says confidence, which is not a feeling here, it is leaning your weight on somebody.

You are being offered a strength that arrives through quietness rather than one you assemble out of steady application. Isaiah 30:15 puts quietness exactly where a working person expects to hear effort, and the Holy Spirit kept that word order rather than the sensible one, which means the empty hour you have not been able to find is not a gap in your usefulness, it is where a particular kind of strength is kept.

Gentle is not the same as stopped

Now let us be plain about what has happened, and let us be kind about it, because there is nothing shameful anywhere in this story.

You did not avoid rest. You substituted for it. Those are different things, and the second one is what good women do.

The quiet jobs are real work. Shelling beans is work. A letter is work. Going through tomorrow's list so tomorrow is not a scramble is work, and it is care, and it is love, and it is also work.

You have four years of faithful evening work behind you and no accusation standing anywhere near it. Proverbs 31:27 says she looketh well to the ways of her household and eateth not the bread of idleness, and it is written as praise rather than as a demand for more, and it is the Spirit of God who calls a rest a gift rather than a lapse, so nothing here is a rebuke and none of it is being taken off you.

The gentle jobs stay. Nobody is coming for the beans. What is being added is an hour, and the hour is the one thing that has not existed.

Commanded, and that is the door

Here is the piece that unlocks it for a woman who cannot sit down.

The stopping is not a suggestion for people with spare time. It is in the commandments, in the same voice and the same list as the great ones, and it is grounded in a people who used to be slaves and were not any more.

Which means the sitting down is not something to be earned by getting far enough ahead. There is no getting far enough ahead. That was never the price, because there was never a price.

You are allowed to stop, and the allowing was issued as a command rather than as a permission you have to ask for. Deuteronomy 5:15 puts the whole commandment on the ground of a people brought out of slavery rather than on the ground of a job finished, and it is the Spirit of the Lord who brings liberty where He is, which means an empty hour in a rocker is obedience and not indulgence.
