The Room She Leaves At That Point

She is very good at it. That is the thing.

The conversation gets to a particular place. Somebody says something about Him coming back, and it is always said warmly, and somebody else says something warm back, and it is going to be a nice ten minutes.

And she stands up and says, right, who is for another one.

It works every time. It is entirely in character. She is the sort of woman who is always up and doing something, and everybody in that room would tell you she is the reason those evenings happen at all, and nobody has ever once looked at each other about it.

She has been doing it for about seven years.

Here is what she cannot say and has never tried to.

She is not being hospitable at that moment. She is leaving.

Her body starts to get up about a second before her mind catches on, and by the time she is at the kitchen door she has already told herself the thing about the kettle, and it is such a good cover that it has fooled her most of the time as well.

She is not carrying anything. She has been over it, at three in the morning, more than once, the way people do.

She simply cannot sit in that ten minutes, and she has built a whole kind habit around not having to.

If you leave the room at that point, come and sit down and let somebody else make the tea. Nobody is going to explain anything at you.

He asks for a shape, and the shape is not bracing

There is an instruction from Jesus about His own return, and everything you need is in what the body is doing in it.

And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.Luke 21:28

Look up. Lift up your heads.

That is not what a bracing body does. A bracing body puts the head down, brings the shoulders up, and makes itself smaller, which is roughly what happens in you about a second before you stand up.

He asks for the opposite. He asks for the shape a person makes when somebody they have missed is coming up the path.

And He gives the reason in the same sentence, and it is the part that gets left off. Your redemption draws near. Not your assessment. Not your account being settled. Redemption, which is a word about being bought back and brought home.

You are being brought toward a homecoming rather than an examination, and the word names it plainly. Luke 21:28 puts redemption as the reason for a lifted head, and it is the Holy Spirit who is called the earnest of that inheritance in Ephesians 1:14, which means what is coming toward you is the arrival of a thing already paid for.

The kettle is not a moral failure

Now the thing about the habit, because it has been half filed as a fault and it is not.

You built an exit and you built a good one. It has protected you from a hundred ten minute stretches you could not sit in, and it has done that without ever making anybody uncomfortable or requiring you to explain something you cannot explain.

That is not cowardice. That is a person managing something with the only material available to them.

But you noticed it, which is why you are reading, and the noticing is worth something. You have been shown this gently rather than caught at it. Romans 2:4 says it is the goodness of God that leads a person, and it is His Spirit who carries that at exactly the temperature somebody can receive, which is why what arrived was a quiet recognition in your own kitchen and not a scene.

And here is what this article will not do, because part of what keeps you standing up is the fear of being handed a diagram.

Nothing here describes anything. No sequence, no order, no chart, no reading of the world, and not one sentence built to make you take this seriously by making it more alarming. This site will not use fear as a motive, and it certainly will not use it on somebody who already has more than she asked for.

I am also not going to send you looking for where it started. That would turn ten minutes on a sofa into an excavation, and you have enough on.

You have not been given the fear, and that is a statement about the supply rather than about your effort. 2 Timothy 1:7 says God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind, and it is the Holy Spirit named there, which means the thing that stands you up is not coming from where you have quietly assumed.

God is the one holding you, and He is not waiting at the end of this to find something out about you.
